Proving your UK immigration status: Share codes

August 13, 2023

# Share codes are how UK visa holders can prove their immigration status.

When it comes to moving to London and navigating the UK's immigration system, one important aspect is proving your valid immigration status. This is essential for various purposes, from employment to accessing public services.

Proving your immigration status with share codes

What are share codes ✨

A share code is a unique and secure way for individuals to provide proof of their UK immigration status. These are often used when speaking with groups such as employers, educational institutions, or healthcare providers. A share code is a digital access code that grants the recipient temporary access to your immigration information.

Who can generate a share code 🇬🇧

Anyone with residence in the UK who needs to prove their immigration status can generate a share code. It's an important tool for individuals who hold a valid UK visa or residence permit and need to demonstrate their right to live and work in the country.

What documents are needed to generate a share code 📄

To generate a share code, you'll need:

  • Details of the identity document you use to sign in to your UKVI account (your passport, national identity card, or biometric residence card or permit)
  • Your date of birth
  • Access to the mobile number or email address you use to sign in to your UKVI account - you’ll be sent a code for logging in

Where to generate a share code 🧑‍💻

To generate share code, you must do so through GOV.UK, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). Do not give your immigration details to any other site other than GOV.UK.

How long share codes are valid ⏱

Once you've generated a share code from GOV.UK it is valid for 30 days. For this 30 day period, you can then share with the relevant parties that need to verify your status.

Privacy and security 🔐

It's important to note that share codes provide temporary access to your immigration status information. They do not grant ongoing access to your personal details. This ensures that your privacy and sensitive information remain protected.
